Clean intonation of pitch is one of the biggest and most important challenges on the double bass. It is therefore imperative to immerse oneself in the close study of intonation.
Intonation can be signi cantly improved by acquiring knowledge of certain basic principles which are pooled in this collection of selected pieces and studies.
In addition to examples of studies and pieces, piano accompaniment and downloadable playalongs are included in this edition.

Since his retirement from the Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover Heinz Bethmann has dedicated himself to arranging and transcribing music. Born in Berlin and growing up in Hannover, he studied accordion and piano at the Musikhochschule Trossingen; followed on to double bass in Hannover (with Horst Stöhr) and Stuttgart (with Fritz Maßmann), and to conducting (with Felix Prohaska, Hannover). After working as a professional double bass player in Göttingen and Kassel he joined the Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover in 1967 Alongside conducting several orchestras (Warburger Kammerorchester, Han- noversche Orchestervereinigung, Göttinger Sinfonieorchester) he played as a soloist in a variety of ensembles (Orchester des Hauses Hohner, Philhar- monisches Salon-Ensemble Hannover) and taught double bass in Hannover since 1970 Today a substantial number of his many pupils are themselves professional double bass players in orchestras all over the world, as well as music college professors, soloists and teachers
Axel Schoenlein holds the position of Professor for Double Bass at the Aca- demy of Music in Santander, Spain. He was born in Hannover and began his double bass studies with Heinz Bethmann in his hometown. He continued his studies with Knut Guettler at the Royal Music Conserva- tory in The Hague, where he also worked professionally with a variety or orchestras and opera houses before commencing his post as professor for double bass in Spain in 1996 Alongside his work at the Academy Axel Schoenlein teaches masterclasses, performs chamber music and appears as a soloist all over Europe Today, many of his students themselves hold professorates and are employed by major orchestras
